Primer isn’t something you use “just because.”
And it’s not something you skip because someone online said you could.

It depends entirely on what you’re painting.

Here’s when primer genuinely matters:

• Tannin-rich timbers – cedar, mahogany and some dark hardwoods can bleed through. That yellow or brown staining isn’t bad paint. It’s the timber reacting.
• Gloss, laminate or factory finishes – if it’s slick and shiny, you either need serious prep… or bonding support.
• Unknown surfaces – if you don’t know what’s underneath, primer removes the gamble.

Do you need it on every piece? No.
Do professionals use it strategically? Absolutely.

Primer isn’t about fear.
