Artisan Real Rust is a premium two-step real rust system that creates an authentic rust patina finish on almost any surface. Simply apply the rust base coat, then activate with the rust solution to produce genuine, naturally oxidising rust.

Artisan Real Rust is a premium two-step real rust system that creates an authentic rust patina finish on almost any surface.

Unlike imitation rust paints, Artisan Real Rust produces genuine oxidisation using real metal particles, delivering a natural, evolving rust effect that continues to age just like real iron.

Perfect for furniture, décor, feature walls, garden pieces, mirrors, artwork and architectural details, this professional system allows you to achieve a true industrial or aged finish with ease.

The rusting reaction begins in under 30 minutes and will continue to develop naturally over time.

How to Use – Real Rust System

  1. Apply the Rust Base Coat
    Apply a generous, even coat of the Artisan Real Rust Base to your surface using a brush or roller.

  2. Activate the Rust
    Once the base coat is touch dry, liberally apply the Rust Activator over the surface.

  3. Watch the Rust Develop
    The rusting process will begin within 30 minutes and continue to deepen as the metal oxidises.

  4. Enhance the Reaction (Optional)
    Lightly mist with water if the surface becomes dry to accelerate and intensify the rusting process. Pro Tip: Add a little salt to the water to enhance the rusting process

  5. Seal the Finish (Recommended)
    As this is a real rust patina, sealing is recommended. Use Artisan Satin Sealer for indoor items or pieces placed outdoors on light-coloured surfaces to prevent rust transfer and staining.

Important Safety Information

Because this system creates real oxidisation:

  • The Rust Base contains fine metal filings

  • The Activator is mildly corrosive

Artisan recommends using:

  • Gloves

  • Protective clothing

  • Safety glasses

during application.
